Individual Note:
CHARLES DANIEL PURCELL was born on a farm 10 miles south of Louisa, Virginia. C. D. Purcell made application on September 14, 1918 for pension. He stated he was 75 years old and entered the service in Staunton. Was captured May 12, 1864 and was taken prisoner at Spotsylvania Courthouse and released on oath at Fort Delaware June 7, 1865. He served under Col. Stewart and A.J. Richardson. He was farming and suffering from rheumatism and bladder trouble. He served with Alex Sprouse of Gordonsville in Co A. 23rd Regt. Infantry, C.S.A. He enlisted March 26, 1862.
FROM HIS PAPERS: Enlisted in the CSA March 8, 1862 at Louisa CH [Court House] by William J. Sims for 3 years as a Private. He was received at Wayside Hospital or General Hospital No 9, Richmond, VA on September 16, 1863 and was dispatched to Chimboraso Hospital, No 3, Richmond, VA on September 17, 1863 and was returned to duty on November 4, 1863. He was taken prisoner of War at the Battle of Spotsylvania on May 12, 1864 and was received on May 28, 1864 at Fort Delaware, DE. He remained here until his release on June 7, 1865. He signed an oath of allegiance to the United States upon his release at Ft. Delaware, DE.
After returning from the war, he worked on the building of Bowles Mill in Louisa County and later worked on the Richmond & Kanawha Canal. He then returned to his 200 acres in Goochland known as the Cedars or Cedar plains. Between 1895 and 1911 he ran a general merchandise store at Vontay, Virginia. In 1911 he sold the store to Walter L. Bourne.
JOHN JERL PURCELL, JR’S NOTES: Charles Daniel had a long white beard and was a Confederate veteran. His Confederate records give his enlistment date as March 26, 1862, however they also show he had not been paid for three years. The record also shows he was taken prisoner on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania CH. He went to Chimboraso Hospital #3 in Richmond, VA. He fought with Jackson throughout all the valley campaigns. He was taken prisoner in the spring of 1865 and returned to his home known as “The Plains.” (I think this is Cedar Plains in Goochland County near Hadensville) in Goochland County, VA. Charles Daniel was a merchant at Vontay, VA between 1895 and 1911. He ran a general merchandise store of which he sold to Walter L. Bourne on November 17, 1911.
