Individual Note: SCHOLARSHIP: The Hannah Roberson Bagwell Endowed Scholarship was established by Mrs. Bagwell, from Washington, North Carolina, a lifelong friend of Wilson, NC’s Barton College. Preference for this scholarship is given to a student majoring in religion and philosophy. The James F. and Hannah Roberson Bagwell Endowed Scholarship was established by the children of Mr. and Mrs. Bagwell of Washington, North Carolina, to honor their parents. This scholarship will be awarded by the Office of Admissions. The following considerations govern eligibility and selection: acceptance of application by the College by February 15, a minimum, recentered total SAT of 1,200 or higher (or ACT equivalent), a minimum, unweighted high school grade point average of 3.50 or higher and ranking in the top five percent of class (where applicable).
ENDOWMENT: By 2008, the BCCC (Beaufort County Community College) Foundation maintained 35 individual endowments that generated a variety of scholarships for BCCC students. One of these was the James Franklin and Hannah Roberson Bagwell Endowment. Established in 1997, this endowment funds annual scholarships in memory of William Riley and Rosa Watson Roberson and William “Bill” Roberson Bagwell. The recipients of these awards must be high school or GED graduates enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program, must demonstrate financial need, and must show academic promise.

Individual Note: After graduation from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Bill Bagwell returned to North Carolina and worked as a chaplain, always sharing his compassion for others. “Bill was always the family mediator,” says his mother, Hannah. “He always found a way to set things right.”
In July 1989, at the age of 33, Bagwell died after a short struggle with a cancerous brain tumor. The following year, his parents, Hannah and James Bagwell, and family friend Grover Boyd, who had started a hand bell choir in his Sunday school class at First Christian Church in Washington, NC, decided a choir bearing his name would continue his life’s legacy of giving joy. The Bill Bagwell Handbell Choir was born and was made up of members of both the church and the community and included members ranging in age from 20 to 80 years old. They’ve traveled as far as the American Church in Paris and the centuries-old Orleans Cathedral--near Paris--in time for the Loire Valley Handbell Festival.
