Individual Note: JOHN JERL PURCELL JR'S NOTES (2 Feb 2008): I found the middle initial P in his name from the obituary of Charles Daniel Purcell the CV dated October 9,1930. I also obtained from Judge Purcell the full middle name of Pedie. Need to check deeds in Lancaster County for this name to see if any exist. Census of 1880 shows John Purcell residing in Licking Hole District, Goochland Co., VA. It says he is a stone mason. Census of 1860 shows a John Purcell being born in Ireland and cannot read or write.

George was in Sigma Nu and USNR. At the time he was married he was in the US Navy as a Lt. Commander. He served during World War II in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean and Pacific. George and Beryl adopted a child naming him George Merrill Ashby III - born 31 Aug 1949.

Beryl came from an English family living in South America. At some point in her marriage, she took her son, George Merrill Ashby III, to Salto, Uruguay in South America, where they lived with her parents. She later divorced husband George Merrill Ashby Jr.

THE NEW YORK TIMES, 28 Nov 1982: Mollie Seignious, daughter of Lieut. Gen. George M. Seignious 2d, U.S.A., retired, of Charleston, S.C., and the late Anne P. Seignious, was married in Charleston yesterday to Richard A. Makepeace Jr., son of Mr. Makepeace of New Bern, N.C., and Mrs. Robert L. Emanuel of Raleigh, N.C. The Rev. Frank Seignious, cousin of the bride, performed the Episcopal ceremony in the Summeral Chapel at The Citadel.
Pam Chambers, sister of the bride, and Lynn Burris were matron and maid of honor.
The bridegroom's father was best man. Mrs. Makepeace, who was graduated from Ashley Hall in Charleston and from Hollins College, is an administrative assistant with the institutional sales group at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Inc. in New York. Her father, former president of The Citadel, was head of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency under President Carter.
The bridegroom, a security analyst with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, is studying for an M.B.A. degree at New York University. He was graduated from the Collegiate Schools in Richmond and cum laude from Washington and Lee University. His father, a former vice president of the Bank of Virginia, heads Trident Securities, investment banking subsidiary of Trident Financial, in New Bern. Mr. Makepeace is a grandson of Harold T. Makepeace of Sanford, N.C., former chairman of the Carolina Bank and former executive secretary to Gov. Luther Hodges of North Carolina.
