Individual Note: Tri-Town News, 1934: Mrs. Sarah J. Shaw, widow of the late Edward S. Shaw, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.C. Simpson in this village, Saturday night after an illness of about nine weeks, at the age of 85 years, she having been born September 13, 1849.
Mrs. Shaw was born at Sidney Center, the daughter of James and Mary Patrick. She was married to Edward Shaw, September 5, 1867 and to them were born three daughters, Ida B. Benedict of Sidney Center, Rosamond Hoyt, deceased, and Mary A. Simpson of this village. Mr. Shaw died at their home in this village March 21, 1924. Besides the two daughters, she is survived by eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Nearly all of Mrs. Shaw’s life was spent in Sidney Center, she and her husband coming to Sidney to make their home about 15 years ago. In her girlhood she united with the Sidney Center Methodist church, in which she retained her membership until the end of her life. In the village where most of her life was spent she was highly regarded not only for her Christian virtues but for her kindness and sincere regard for the happiness of her neighbors. During the years in Sidney she made many friends, although advancing age compelled her closer confinement to the home. She was remarkably active for one of her years until nine weeks ago, and during her confinement her room has been a bower of beautiful flowers, the gifts of friends and neighbors.
The funeral was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Simpson, on West Main Street, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, the services being in charge of Rev. F.W. Connell, pastor of the Sidney Methodist church, and the internment was in Highland cemetery at Sidney Center. The room in the Simpson home, where the casket was placed during the funeral, was filled with beautiful floral offerings, a display of mute affection and esteem, evidencing the beautiful character of Mrs. Shaw as well as the high place in the esteem of her neighbors, which she held.
The bearers at the funeral were Herman Von Kampen, John Brown, Archie Bristol, Harry Wakelee, Merton Smith and Frank Johnson, neighbors of the deceased. Among the out-of-town people attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Shaw and Guy Patrick of Binghamton; Mrs. Cora Miller, Morris; Mrs. Inez Bidwell, Oneonta; Mr. and Mrs. Olin Benedict and Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Benedict, Walton; Raymond Simpson of New York city; Mrs. Leslie Young and Mrs. Iva Hamlin of Norwich.
