      CENSUS DATA: William H. Morgan and family were counted in the 1920 U.S. census on January 30th as living on 5th Street in the city of Washington, Beaufort County, NC. They are listed in Volume 7, line 28, Supervisor's district 11, Enumeration district 17, sheet 9.
        William owned his home (mortgaged) and was age 64. He and his parents were all born in NC. He worked on his "own account" as a dealer in the retail grocery business. At the time, he lived with wife, Wilmoth, age 55, and son William H., age 28, who worked as a manager in a tobacco company. Also living in the home were son Franklin J., age 33, a post office clerk, his wife Myrtle R.,age 23, and their children Myrtle W., age 2, and Frances D., 7 months old.

      BIOGRAPHY: William A. Potts was born in Washington, North Carolina in 1827 and died in Savannah, Georgia, 15 Dec 1900. After his marriage in New Bern, NC, he continued to live in Washington, where he was engaged in naval stores operations, manufactured turpentine and operated a line of sailing vessels to the West Indies. His death took place while he was on a visit to Savannah. Never a politician, he always, however, gave the Democratic Party a warm support. From his youth up a member of the Presbyterian Church of Washington, for many years he was one of the elders, and was the main pillar of it. In Masonry he maintained membership with Orr Lodge no. 104, A.F. and A.M., of Washington, and he was a past master of the lodge. He married Josephine Latham in New Bern, NC. She was born there in 1830 and died in Washington, North Carolina, in May, 1895. Their children were as follows: Lucy, William Jr., Joseph, Lida (died in infancy), Hannah (died in infancy), Ida, John R., Zophar Mills, Frederick and Nets (Nedia).
        CENSUS: 1860 US Census: W.A. Potts, age 33 was a merchant with personal property valued at 20M. He lived with wife, Josephine, age 27, and children: Susan(?), age 9; Joseph, age 8; William, age 6; Julia, age 4; and Eliza, age 2. Joseph, Julia and Eliza were not counted in the next 2 censuses (1870 and 1880) and may have died young.
        1870 US Census: William and Josephine lived next door to his father and mother, Joseph and Annie. Their four listed children, all born in NC, were: Suzy L., age 18; W.A. Potts Jr., age 15; Ida, age 5; and John R., age 2.
        1900 US Census: William Potts, age 72, was living with his daughter Lucy, age 48 and son-in-law Frederick A. Hanks, age 48.

      BIOGRAPHY: Lucy, who married Fred F. Hanks, died at Andrews, SC, aged 72. Fred also died there, where he was boss mechanic for the South Atlantic Company, but earlier in life had been a trans-Atlantic engineer.
        CENSUS: The 1900 U.S. census lists "Lucy", age 48, as the daughter of William Potts, age 72, who was living with her and her family at the time. Her husband, Frederick A. Hanks, age 48, was a machinist renting his home. His father was born in Mass. and his mother born in NC. Also living in the house were six children: Josephine, age 24; Abraham, age 8; Aretia, age 16; Ida, age 11; George, age 8; and Hottie, age 7.
