Individual Note: In the spring of 1867 the Frazier family started West from Hood County, Texas, heading for the Willamette Valley in Oregon. One son was born on the Oregon Trail in Nebraska in a tent town on the Platte River (called the Platte River encampment). This child was most likely that son.

Individual Note: CENSUS: Farmer. According to page 83 of the U.S. census, taken August 22, 1850, William P. (Philander) Shaw and wife Mary lived at dwelling #269, family #281 in Sidney, Delaware, NY. He was a farmer with $700 in real estate. Living with them were son Frederick, age 4 and Edward, age 6. His mother was born in Connecticut.
According to page 627 of the U.S. 1860 Census for the Town of Sidney, Delaware, NY, William P. Shaw and wife, Mary, lived at dwelling 949, family 933. He had $1,200 in real estate and $689 in personal property. Living with them were four children: Edward, 16; Frederick, 14; Susan, 8; and Emory, 2.
1880 Federal census lists farmer William on page 5 dwelling 41 family 47. Son Fred A. Shaw, age 29, now lives nearby (page 6 dwelling 45 family 51) with his wife Sarah, 34 and infant son, Frank.

Individual Note: Andrew and Martha were members of the Christian Church in Milton. He was also a Mason, having joined in Texas in 1867. He was the first mayor of Milton. Andrew was born in Tennessee where he received a public school education. In 1859 he moved to Texas and joined the Confederate army. He enlisted in Company I, Nelson's regiment, under Captain Fermault, and served in many campaigns and battles. After the war he returned to Texas and in 1867 went by wagon train to Oregon with his new wife Martha L. Frazier and her father, William S. Frazier.

Individual Note: History of Delaware County, N.Y. (p.288), Munsell, 1880: Matthew enlisted in the same company (3rd NY Cavalry) as brother George L. Benedict at the same date. He was discharged July 8, 1862. On March 12, 1863 he married Hannah Wells of Sidney. He is a Methodist and a farmer. Died 11 years after Hannah. Was also a leading merchant and later a carrier on the RFD route.

Individual Note: History of Delaware County (p. 288), Munsell, 1880 : George L. Benedict enlisted in Co. E 3rd NY Cavalry on Aug 16, 1861 and was discharged April 16,1862. He died in May following from disease contracted in the army.
