Note for:   Daniel Gomez,   23 Jun 1695 - 28 Jul 1780         Index

Individual Note:
Daniel met and married a member of an ancient Sephardic family in Jamaica, Rebecca de Torres. After five years she died in childbirth, and Daniel subsequently found another bride in Curacao, Esther Levy. His brother, Benjamin, likewise found a bride in Jamaica.
David took six years to build the Gomez (1717-23) house and it served as a trading post besides the Gómez family home.
When the Revolutionary war broke out, the occupation of New York by Hessian and British troops caused the Jews concern, for two-thirds or more of the Jews were solidly in support of the revolution, despite the fact that such a position was against the commercial interests of many of them. The synagogue was obliged to close its doors, and Daniel was among the many Jews who fled to areas held by the revolutionaries. He and his family moved to Philadelphia, the heart of the American patriotic movement, where he became one of the founders of a new Sephardic congregation, the Mikveh Israel.

Individual Note:
The will of ABRAHAM MENDES SEIXAS:
I, ABRAHAM MENDES SEIXAS, otherwise MIGUEL PACHECO DA SILVA, being in my best understanding, though incapable of making my own will with my own hand for want of sight, have caused these Presents to be made. I declare that I was lawfully married once and had 3 children, all of whom are now living, to wit, Judith, wife of Rodrigo Pacheco, Isaac, who is now a single man, and Rebecca, wife of Daniel Mendes Seixas," And as I have given to the husbands of my daughters their marriage portions, I give to each of my daughters £20 as a token of love, and to my son Isaac only £50 for reasons known to myself. I leave to Esther da Silva, who is at present in my company, £50. To my son in law, Daniel Mendes Seixas, £80. And I make my two sons in law executors, and they are to allow my son £30 a year. If he marries with their approval and has children, they are to divide the estate between them, otherwise at his death I leave the whole to my two daughters. Done at Bethnal Green, March 6, 175|. Witnesses, Abraham de Mesquito, Premental, Isaac Messoptrix. Faithfully translated from the Portuguese original, according to the best of my skill, this 10 of April, 1738. JOHN DA COSTA."
