Note for:   Austin Kilham,   1595/1597 - 15 Apr 1667 or 5 Jun 1667         Index

Individual Note:
Records indicate the name has been spelled about thirteen different ways. The most consistent spelling in our branch has been “Kilham" and "Killam". Perley gives the origin of the family in the West Riding of Yorkshire, or possibly Suffolk County, England.
Henry Kilham was the father of Austin Kilham our emigrant ancestor. Henry married Alice Goodale at Dennington, Suffolk County, England, August 12, 1582; he was buried May 27, 1631. See New England Historical and Genealogical Record 1898 for English Gleanings by Mr. Waters for record of children and copy of most interesting will. He gave his son Austin "all my apparell" and his grandson Daniel “ten shillings or else my biggest kettle". Children of Henry and Kilham were Alice, Austin, and Robert.
Austin probably came to America from Dennington, Suffolk County, England, in the "Mary Anne" of Yarmouth, being examined May 11, 1736, as "desirous to goe to Salam in the New E." At a town meeting, held Aug. 7, 1637 'Augustin Kelham is admitted for inhabitant & is to have a qrter of an acre before Easties house’. He moved to Dedham and he and his wife were received into the church Aug. 28, 1640. In 1648 the family moved to Wenham. Wenham records commence in 1643 but do not mention Austin until 1653 when he was assessed one days work. In 1652, his wife was presented for wearing a silk hood. In 1653 the people of Wenham contributed to the support of Harvard College and he and his sons Daniel and John were among the contributors. Of the twenty-five persons who contributed only four gave more than Austin. His land was in the center of Wenham and he gave the land (20 acres) for the meeting house in 1660. His will and that of his wife is on file in the probate office of Salem. The wills of Austin and his wife and inventories of their estates and other interesting notes are shown in Genealogy of the Kilham Family by Sidney Perley. He left an estate of about 122 pounds including 22 acres of land valued at 76 pounds.
Alice survived him and the inventory of her estate totaled nine pounds and eight shillings, consisting mostly of clothing and two spoons.
